Sagamore, a National Historic Landmark and Save America’s Treasures official project is a 27-building complex dating from 1897. Built by William West Durant, it was sold to Alfred G. Vanderbilt in 1901 as Durant was brought to his knees through a series of financial difficulties. Vanderbilt, the wealthiest young man in the American Gilded Age, was famous for his love of horses. He boarded the Lusitania in 1915 to attend a meeting of a racing society in England and died on May 4 when the ship was torpedoed. Vanderbilt’s widow Margaret, a famous hostess and head of the Red Cross in the Pacific in World War II, kept Sagamore as the family’s summer Adirondack retreat until 1954. http://www.sagamore.org |
